@1o951o8 It is probably the best, but some believe that Lincoln’s best speech was given in Bloomington, Illinois (I think) in the mid 1850s. The reporters and scribes (the people that were supposed to copy it down for the papers) all said it was too profound and amazing to take notes on. Every person taking notes and copying the speech stopped after a few minutes and the rest of the speech is lost to history,

It is no accident that we Americans consider and love Abraham Lincoln as a gift from God. It was not our own might that freed us, but that of Providence, and Providence hath preserved us a people.

His words solidify the spirit of the nation for which he stood.

    Abe, Brother, AMEN!!!

the great irony of this speech is that ol’ abe said that the world wouldn’t long note what was said there. :( it’ll be remembered till the end of time.

@Rascasseman By prosecuting the war of Northern Aggression against tht eSouth Lincoln violated the very principles this country was founded on. The idea that the People have the right to decide who governs them.

  6. tigercubkitten says:

@johnmaylivesv “The idea that the People have the right to decide” — unless, of course, you’re one of the 2/5ths of Southerners who was a slave. or probably the other 1/3rd that were loyal to the Union.

@tigercubkitten Thanks for the kind words. The mentality reflective in your comments accurately represents base opposition to the conservative movement currently underway. It gives me hope for the future.

  8. TheMakayla100 says:

I think he was better than Washington!

  9. TheMakayla100 says:

Give Obama a chance! He hasn’t even been president very long!

  10. johnmaylivesv says:

@tigercubkitten You may want to study it in more depth. Slavery was a side issue but one that Lincoln exploited to build support for a very unpopular (and illegal) war (it wouldn’t sound so good if he was honest and stated he had over 600,000 people killed to maintain his power). The real issue was states’ rights, and taxation. The North actually attempted to force the South to buy their goods through tariffs, whereas, Southerners did not want to do so.

  11. johnmaylivesv says:

@johnmaylivesv part 2 The South paid most of the federal taxes yet had less control over the government than the Northern states that paid little. Furthermore, it was over the rights of states (10th Amendment) to secede and the right of the people to popular sovereignty The South was fighting for the same thing we fought for in the Revolution: the right to determine your own government

Lincoln was a great president. and as in the civil war he what he had to do. His emancipation proclamation was nothing more then a note keeping the world out of the war such as Britain and other countries. lincoln was great and i would push to say best president ever.

In fifth grade i had to recite the Getysburg adress. LOL!!

  16. ParadiseOnLand says:

Lincoln hangs himself in regards to Negro slavery, taxation, Habeas Corpus, & states’ rights. The man was consistently on the wrong side of any given issue. Let us strive to find an historical personage more deserving of our worship.

  17. 1patrickhenry1 says:

@Rascasseman As an American speaking to a British person, I would say that I have much admiration for someone like Lord Acton, who wrote to Confederate General Robert E. Lee that he “mourned more for what was lost at Richmond more deeply than I rejoice for which was saved at Waterloo.” Acton knew the war was about checking absolute centralized power, and not freeing slaves.

  18. Rascasseman says:

@1patrickhenry1 I know what you mean and understand where you are coming from. States rights was a headline argument for the causes of the Civil War and perfectly arguable. But the way I see it, Lincoln really is the father of the United States! Changing it for the better upon which has brought much admiration and much jealousy. Regardles of motives for the Civil War, what a leader he was!
